Why do we remember some things and forget others

Why do we remember some things, and others just slip away from our minds? Why do memories fade away?

A short animation in the YouTube TED-Ed channel explains how memories are created, stored and eventually lost.

Ageing is one cause of memory loss, as brain synapses grow weaker as the years advance. Chronic stress is another cause – it piles up when we are overworked or overburdened in our personal lives. Depression is a factor too. Besides losing old memories, in all these cases we also find it considerably harder to commit new information to memory.

There are some easy things we could do to help our memory. The most effective are physical exercise, healthy food and keeping our brain in shape through constantly learning new things.
